We recognise, and have ourselves faced, the transphobia that people are subjected to when interacting with Community Safety, the Residential Community Team, and Wellbeing Services. Therefore, we will campaign for mandatory and specialised trans* inclusion training for all frontline staff in these departments – something that should already exist.
As it stands, and following their “refresh”, Warwick’s Student Inclusion Group does not hear from students in reality. We will campaign for actual student representation within these University bodies, in ways which cannot be rolled back on in a year’s time. We say this while also recognising that it is not through the University by which we will achieve liberation, but it is important to have our voices heard.
Last year, trans* students at Warwick experienced confusion and fear when the University pre-emptively published their plans to roll back on trans inclusion and safety at Warwick in response to the UK Supreme Court judgement. With a promise to keep dialogue open through the Supreme Court Working Group, communication soon fell apart, leaving trans* staff and students in the dark as to what protections they have at the University. We will campaign to re-open these channels of dialogue and provide answers to the Warwick trans* community as to how the University will recognise and protect us.
